Lake City Overview
Coeur d'Alene is the regional hub of North Idaho. The downtown wraps the north end of Lake Coeur d'Alene, fed by three rivers and stretching about twenty-five miles south. The shoreline winds through 109 miles of bays, peninsulas, and forest. From Watson's in Cataldo, you are about thirty minutes west on I-90, and the difference between Rose Lake quiet and Coeur d'Alene activity is exactly the contrast many guests come for.
Use Coeur d'Alene as a day trip. Drive in for the lake, the trails, the dining, or an event, and come back to Watson's for sunset on Rose Lake.
Lake and Waterfront
The lakefront promenade runs along the north shore through downtown, connecting the public docks at Independence Point, City Park, and McEuen Park. Lake cruises depart from Independence Point, including a daily ninety-minute scenic cruise, a brunch cruise, and a two-hour sunset dinner cruise in season. Brooks Seaplane runs sightseeing flights from the city dock, lifting off the lake for a forty-five-minute loop over the water and forest.
The Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course is famous for its floating green, a green that drifts on the lake and is accessed by a small ferry. Tee times are at a premium in season; book ahead.
Downtown Highlights
Tubbs Hill is a 120-acre nature park that sits right on the edge of downtown, with a two-mile loop trail along the shoreline. The hike is easy, the views are continuous, and the trailhead is a five-minute walk from the city core. McEuen Park, just north, is a 22-acre downtown park with a playground, splash pad, dog park, and event space. Independence Point and City Park have the sandy public beach.
Sherman Avenue is the main downtown street, lined with art galleries, restaurants, and shops. Mineral Ridge Scenic Area, three miles east of town, has a three-mile loop trail with panoramic views of the lake.
For dining, downtown Coeur d'Alene runs the gamut from casual lakeside cafes to white-tablecloth fine dining. The Coeur d'Alene Resort dining room overlooks the marina, and a handful of independent restaurants on Sherman Avenue keep the rotation interesting through the year. For coffee and a slow morning, the Vault and Calypsos are local standbys.
On the Trail
The North Idaho Centennial Trail runs more than 23 miles of paved path along the Spokane River and the north shore of the lake, connecting Coeur d'Alene to the Washington state line. For cyclists used to the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes on the east side, the Centennial Trail offers a different character: more urban, more boat traffic to watch, and a connection straight into Spokane.
Year-Round Events
Coeur d'Alene runs a packed calendar. The Mac & Cheese Festival in January, Chocolate Affair in February, Winefest in April, Brewfest in July, and Oktoberfest in September are the anchor events, and a Big Five Event Pass is sold each year that covers all of them. CDA On Ice, the outdoor holiday rink at McEuen Park, runs daily from early November through late January and is one of the better holiday-season activities in the region.
Skip the In-Town Hotel Rates
Coeur d'Alene's lakefront hotels run at a premium, especially in summer. Watson's puts you on the lake (a different lake, but the lake) thirty minutes east. You get a real cabin, an apartment, or a one-of-a-kind dome or safari tent for less than most CdA hotel rooms, and the city is a short, scenic drive when you want it. Cyclist guests do this as a matter of course; the trails are out the back door, the CdA day trip is built in.

Other Day Trips from Watson's
From Watson's you can stack Coeur d'Alene with the Coeur d'Alene Casino and Circling Raven (about an hour southwest, in Worley) or run the southern lake via Harrison and Gateway Marina for a quieter take on the same lake.
Stay at Watson's, Day-Trip to Coeur d'Alene
