Rose Lake and the Surrounding Area

Rose Lake sits in the heart of Northern Idaho's Coeur d'Alene River valley, tucked between Fourth of July Pass and the Silver Valley. It's a quiet, scenic area that happens to be surrounded by some of the best outdoor recreation in the state — trails, lakes, mountains, and historic towns, all within a short drive.

Whether you're staying at Watson's Lakefront Resort or just passing through on I-90, here's what's worth your time.

Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes

The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes is a 73.2-mile paved rail-trail running from Mullan to Plummer through river valleys, wetlands, and lakeshores. Built on the former Union Pacific railroad corridor, the trail is nearly flat, fully paved, and wheelchair accessible. The Rails to Trails Conservancy has inducted it into the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame, and it draws over 140,000 visits per year.

The trail passes directly by Watson's Lakefront Resort, making it easy to hop on for a ride, walk, or skate. Along the route, you'll pass through the Coeur d'Alene River Wildlife Management Area, where moose, deer, elk, Great Blue Herons, and other wildlife are common sightings.

On the Water

Rose Lake itself is a 370-acre lake ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, and fishing. Idaho Fish and Game stocks the lake with Channel Catfish, and it's also home to Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, and Black Crappie. Watson's has direct lake access with a boat ramp and dock. The surrounding wetlands are part of the Coeur d'Alene River Wildlife Management Area, managed by Idaho Fish and Game as a haven for waterfowl and shorebirds.

Old Mission State Park

Just minutes from Watson's in Cataldo, Coeur d'Alene's Old Mission State Park is home to the Mission of the Sacred Heart — the oldest standing building in Idaho. The mission was constructed between 1850 and 1853 by Jesuit missionaries and members of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe using wattle and daub construction, remarkably assembled without nails. It's a National Historic Landmark.

The park's visitor center houses the Sacred Encounters exhibit, which details the history of the Coeur d'Alene people and the Jesuit missionaries. The grounds include the restored parish house and two historic cemeteries. Vehicle entry is $7, with an additional fee for exhibits.

Silver Mountain Resort

Silver Mountain Resort in Kellogg is about 20 minutes east on I-90. In winter, it's a full ski resort featuring North America's longest gondola ride — the Silver Mountain Gondola carries riders over 3,400 vertical feet. In summer, the mountain offers scenic gondola rides, hiking, and a downhill mountain bike park. The Silver Rapids indoor waterpark at the base provides family-friendly fun year-round regardless of weather.

Route of the Hiawatha

The Route of the Hiawatha near Lookout Pass (about 45 minutes east) is a 15-mile scenic mountain bike trail with 10 dark train tunnels — including the 1.66-mile-long St. Paul Pass Tunnel — and 7 sky-high trestles. The trail runs on a gentle downhill grade, and shuttle buses transport riders back to the top. It's been inducted into the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame and is consistently rated one of the top bike trails in the country.

Historic Wallace

Wallace, Idaho is about 35 minutes east and is the only town in the United States entirely listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town's mining heritage is on full display — take the Sierra Silver Mine Tour underground, visit the Northern Pacific Depot Museum, browse eclectic shops, and grab a beer at one of the town's historic breweries. Wallace has a vibrant downtown that feels frozen in time in the best possible way.

Emerald Creek Garnet Area

South of Rose Lake toward St. Maries, the Emerald Creek Garnet Area in the Idaho Panhandle National Forests is one of only two places in the world where you can find star garnets — the Idaho state gem. Digging for garnets is a popular family activity during summer months. Permits are required and available through Recreation.gov.

White Pine Scenic Byway

For a scenic drive, the White Pine Scenic Byway begins near Cataldo at the junction of I-90 and Idaho Highway 3. The 80-mile route travels south through historic timber country, passing marshlands, the St. Maries River, and the St. Joe River. It's a beautiful drive with opportunities to spot wildlife along the way.

Where to Stay

Watson's Lakefront Resort offers five unique accommodations on Rose Lake — two log cabins, a geodesic dome, a safari tent, and The Tavern Loft. Red's Tavern, the on-site garden-to-table restaurant, means you don't have to drive anywhere for a great dinner. It's the ideal base camp for exploring everything Northern Idaho has to offer.
